Australian tax invoice requirements for Shopify stores
If you're registered for GST in Australia, buyers can ask for a tax invoice. Here are the thresholds and the details it needs.
| Sale total (GST incl.) | Requirement |
|---|---|
| A$82.50 or less | You don't have to provide a tax invoice on request. |
| Under A$1,000 | Seven details: (1) that it's intended as a tax invoice, (2) your identity, (3) your ABN, (4) the issue date, (5) a brief description of items with quantity and price, (6) the GST amount, or "Total price includes GST" when GST is exactly 1/11 of the total, (7) the extent to which each sale is taxable. |
| A$1,000 or more | All of the above, plus the buyer's identity or ABN. |
Provide it within 28 days of a request. Australia calls credit notes "adjustment notes".
What this means on Shopify
- Put your ABN and the words "Tax invoice" on the printed document.
- If you sell a mix of GST-free and taxable items (for example some foods), each line must show whether it's taxable.
- Round GST to the nearest cent, with 0.5c rounding up.
Check any amount with the invoice requirements checker.
Kiwi GST Invoices is a Shopify app we're building that prints NZ and AU tax invoices with these fields filled in from each order. It is not on the Shopify App Store yet (it hasn't been released).
