NZ GST invoice requirements for Shopify stores
Since 1 April 2023, New Zealand uses "taxable supply information" (TSI) instead of the old tax-invoice rules. Here is what changes at each threshold, and how that maps to a Shopify order.
| Order total (GST incl.) | What you must provide if the buyer asks |
|---|---|
| NZ$200 or less | Nothing to the buyer, but keep records: your name, the date, a description and the amount. |
| Over NZ$200, up to NZ$1,000 | Your name or trade name and GST number, the date, a description, and either the GST-exclusive amount, GST and GST-inclusive amount, or the GST-inclusive amount plus a statement that GST is included at 15% for everything listed. |
| Over NZ$1,000 | All of the above, plus, if the buyer is GST-registered, the buyer's name and at least one identifier: address, phone, email, trading name, NZBN or website. |
You must provide it within 28 days of a request. The words "tax invoice" are no longer required, though you can still use them.
What this means on Shopify
- Shopify's default order confirmation usually shows your store name, date and items. Check that it also shows your GST number; many themes leave it out.
- For orders over NZ$1,000, Shopify doesn't know if the buyer is GST-registered. The safe option is to show the buyer's name and address on every invoice over the threshold.
- Thresholds are on the GST-inclusive total in NZD. If you sell in other currencies through Shopify Markets, check the NZD equivalent.
Check any amount with the invoice requirements checker.
Kiwi GST Invoices is a Shopify app we're building that prints NZ and AU tax invoices with these fields filled in from each order. It is not on the Shopify App Store yet (it hasn't been released).
